Jeffie Davis - Belle of Richmond This is a political cartoon drawn by an anonymous illustrator, portraying Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy, in a quite unflattering light. He is drawn wearing women's clothing, drinking profusely, and facing the hangman's noose, as well as many other unflattering situations.
This cartoon is significant because it illustrates the South's view of Jefferson Davis. They clearly viewed him as weak, seen from the dress he is wearing in the first illustration and the big petty coat he has on and his pant being put on by the woman in the third illustration. Rachel M. |
This is a white man's government This is a political cartoon depicting 3 white men stepping on and holding hands over a black man. The black man is laying on a fallen American flag and looks quite uncomfortable. One man is holding a club over the black man's head that reads "a vote", which could mean that the white men will hold the privilege of voting over slaves' heads, but end up beating them with the same club.
The significance of the this political cartoon is that it exemplified the attitude of the majority of white people, even in the North, about black people. Black people were clearly inferior and were going to be kept out of the government, as well as everything else. Rachel M. |
Sickly Democrat This is a political cartoon depicting an ill man with bandages around his head, his feet in warm water, and a disgruntled look on his face. He is being tended to by another man, giving him some sort of medication.
This is significant because this is how the majority of democrats felt when Lincoln took office. Lincoln had his plans and he was going to stick to them for the good of the country, whether every single person agreed with him or not. The Democrats' needs weren't being met and the population were depleting. Rachel M. |
